A Touch of Understanding, Inc. provides students with a hands-on opportunity to understand the challenges of disabilities as well as the skills necessary to meet those challenges. Students use wheelchairs, canes, and crutches. They handle braces and artificial arms and legs. They write their name in Braille and participate in a mirror-writing activity to understand the frustration of a learning disability. Individuals with disabilities share their experiences and insight with the students. Activities, discussion and videos give students a glimpse into the lives of individuals with disabilities. The impact is positive, strong and lasting. As stated by these elementary school students: I used to be the kid who made fun of the disabled, but now I will be more tolerant of them, seeing how they live and what they go through. I learned not to think about what people who have disabilities can’t do, but what they can.I learned you can still have dreams! I learned one more thing: to never try to make fun of somebody that has a disability. I learned that when you look at someone, don’t see the chair, you should see the person. I learned that people with disabilities can do a lot. People with disabilities can be your friends. Right Side: A Donation has been made in your honor to A Touch of Understanding.
